Spring Mill Inn to close for mechanical overhaul

The Spring Mill Inn, situated in Spring Mill State Park in Lawrence County, is closing for major mechanical renovations beginning this Sunday. Our partners at WEHT-TV report the overhaul, which was first announced in March, will involve replacement of the historic building’s water lines, fire alarms, sprinklers, and HVAC system.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says the project will require extended closure of the entire facility, impacting the entirety of the 73-room inn, including lodging rooms, conference facilities, and the Millstone Dining Room.
While officials say the inn is structurally sound, the station reports the building is in need of “significant work,” which could also include renovating windows and doors, accessibility upgrades, as well as furnishing and bathroom upgrades and conversion of the existing swimming pool into a splash pad.
“Complete closure of one of our most iconic Indiana State Park inns for more than a year is a difficult decision,” said Indiana DNR Director Dan Bortner. “However, the modernization of the inn’s ‘behind the scenes’ safety and comfort systems is best accomplished with this approach. When guests can return, they will appreciate the improvements from the moment they check-in at the new centrally located welcome desk to their renovated rooms.”
According to the station, all current inn employees will remain employed during the renovation and will be transferred to other areas of the park or other inn locations.
Although the inn is not expected to reopen until 2024, Spring Mill’s trails, activity center, Gus Grissom Memorial, and other facilities will remain open to the public.
