South Bend schools approve sale of admin building

The South Bend Community School Corp. is closing in on a deal that would hand over the school system’s headquarters to the city of South Bend and turn the building into municipal administrative offices. The South Bend Tribune reports the school board voted 4-2 Monday to transfer ownership following months of negotiations.
The deal still requires approval from South Bend’s Board of Public Works, which is expected to vote next Tuesday, followed by a vote of the city council in October.
Divesting of the school HQ is part of the district’s larger facilities planning process, in light of declining enrollment.
The publication says the city will pay $2.8 million for the school building. SBCSC plans to use most of the money to renovate a former middle school and turn it into school corporation’s main office.
The sale of the administration building to the city is expected to be finalized next month, but the school district will temporarily lease the building until it moves in 2024.
City administrative offices will eventually move out of the County-City Building to the school building.
