INDOT begins next phase to improve I-80/I-94

The Indiana Department of Transportation says a project to improve traffic flow and safety along Indiana’s busiest interstate corridor, I-80/I-94, is moving to the next phase. 80/94 FlexRoad will develop solutions for the corridor, including strategies to reduce travel time, increase reliability and improve safety.
INDOT says the National Environmental Policy Act study, which is required for projects that will receive federal funding, will analyze benefits, impacts and costs of the alternatives.
The department says it is considering strategies involving dynamic shoulder lanes, variable speed limits, ramp metering, lane control and queue warning systems. The strategies are known as Transportation Systems Management and Operations strategies.
The project includes the I-80/I-94 corridor from I-65 in Indiana on the east to IL 394 on the west.
The NEPA phase of the project follows INDOT’s year-long Planning and Environment Linkages study, which determined the purpose and need for the project and developed the alternatives. It was approved by the Federal Highway Administration in April.
INDOT says the next public meeting is expected to take place in the fall.
