A campaign aimed at raising funds to improve a southeast Indiana landmark has received a boost. The Clark-Floyd Counties Convention and Tourism Bureau and the Town of Clarksville have donated $300,000 toward the Falls of the Ohio Foundation Crossroads Campaign. August 23, 2013

News Release

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. – A contribution to the Falls of the Ohio Foundation Crossroads Campaign by the Clark-Floyd Counties Convention and Tourism Bureau and the Town of Clarksville has placed the Foundation over the top for a challenge grant from the James Graham Brown Foundation. Raising funds for improvements and new exhibits to one of the state's most popular park facilities is the purpose for the fundraising activity. A symbolic check presentation is scheduled for 2 pm Tuesday, August 27, at the Falls of the Ohio State Park Interpretive Center to mark the occasion.

The contribution, totaling $300,000, will be combined with funds from the State of Indiana in the amount of $400,000 and the James Graham Brown Foundation totaling $500,000, and other funds for the Falls of the Ohio Foundation Crossroads Campaign at the state park's interpretive center.

The $300,000 had originally been part of a comprehensive bond issue undertaken by the Convention-Tourism Bureau to fund multiple projects in Jeffersonville, New Albany and Clarksville. The town's $300,000 was to go toward a museum. However, as planning for that project developed, it became apparent that the original design could not be implemented with available funds and the money was set aside.

As the Falls Foundation nears the deadline of the Brown Foundation's matching grant of $1 for every $2 raised up to $500,000, Clarksville town officials, in cooperation with the Convention-Tourism Bureau, determined that the best use of the shelved funds would be to help the Falls of the Ohio Crossroads Campaign reach its goal, and to re-visit the town's museum plans at a later date. The infusion of the $300,000 leveraged the match bringing in $450,000

“It is rewarding to see the cooperation between the Clarksville Council and the Bureau in helping to push this project over the top,” said Clark-Floyd Counties Convention-Tourism Bureau Executive Director Jim Keith.

Foundation Director Dani Cummins noted that the funds came at just the right time. “We expect to be able to meet the timeframe for the James Graham Brown Foundation Challenge Grant with the help of the Town and the Convention Bureau,” she said.

Clarksville Town Council President Bobby Polston said, “We were happy to be able to help out in this time-sensitive project.”

The Falls of the Ohio Interpretive Center is located at the West End of Riverside Drive in Clarksville.
