Purdue Sets Outdoor Business Workshops

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Two workshops in September will help landowners learn how to create outdoor businesses to generate extra income.
Experts and business owners will talk about revenue potential, wildlife habitat management, and liability and legal considerations at the Natural Resource Enterprises workshops, of which Purdue Extension is a sponsor. The pros and cons of various types of outdoor businesses – such as hunting leases, vacation rentals, agritourism, trail riding and Christmas tree farms – will be discussed.
“We help landowners learn about generating supplemental income from their property,” said Brian MacGowan, Purdue Extension wildlife specialist and forestry and natural resources Extension coordinator. “Whether you are considering an outdoor business or already have a business that you wish to expand, the information at this workshop will help you.”
The Natural Resource Enterprises program is a partnership among Purdue, Mississippi State University and the Indiana Farm Bureau.
The workshops will be held Sept. 4 on the property of Bob and Ellen Mulford in Versailles, Ind., and on Sept. 5 on the property of Rick and Debbie Schavietello in Waynetown, Ind. Each will be from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with presentations in the morning and a walking tour of the property in the afternoon.
The tour of the Mulford property will feature bird and wildlife viewing, wetland restoration and woodland habitat management. The tour of the Schavietellos' will present examples of forest management and wildlife food plots. Both tours will examine warm-season grasses and wildlife habitats.
Deadline for the early registration fee of $35 is Aug. 27 for the Versailles workshop and Aug. 29 for the Waynetown workshop. On-site registration costs $45 and begins at 8:30 a.m.
