The YMCA says plans for the estimated $4.2 million project include construction of a retractable dome that would provide residents with both an indoor and outdoor pool with year-long access.
The YMCA says a fundraising shortfall prevented the pool from being a part of a 2008 building expansion. The nonprofit has raised more than $800,000 for the pool through private donations, city ARP funds, and redevelopment commission funds.
“It is truly exciting to be in the planning stages of bringing this fantastic amenity to Portage,” said Shannon Burhans, president of the Portage Township YMCA. “I honestly was not sure if I would see this during my time here at the Y, but I am so glad to be a part of this!”
The YMCA says its goal is to raise enough money for an endowment, in addition to covering construction costs. The endowment would help ensure the pool will be around for many generations to enjoy.
The organization is planning to conduct a feasibility study to assess all aspects of the project, including existing facility upgrades, construction costs, and operational costs.
