United Steelworkers Local 1999 President Robert James tells our partners at WTHR-TV the employees were hired back due to increased demand.
James said all of the employees had been let go from the company and are now receiving the same pay and benefits package they had before being laid off. He says the workers will continue at the plant at least through the end of the summer, but they’re hoping to stay on through the end of the year.
Carrier began the layoffs of more than 630 workers on its fan coil manufacturing production line, which was being outsourced to Mexico, in July 2017. Those jobs were not part of a deal made in late November between Carrier and then-President-elect Donald Trump, in which Carrier agreed to keep 1,100 jobs in Indy, 800 of which were slated to also go to Mexico.
As part of the deal, Carrier agreed to invest $16 million to make the Indianapolis facility into a gas furnace production Center of Excellence. The Indiana Economic Development Corp. approved $7 million in incentives as a result.
The last of the layoffs took place in January, after being delayed a month due to demand. James tells WTHR while the rehired employees are hoping to stay on as long as possible, he does not know exactly how long they will remain on the payroll.
