Railway Age Editor-in-Chief William Vantuono says INRD’s strategy in expanding its non-coal traffic set it apart from its peers. The railroad faced traffic and revenue losses after Indianapolis Power & Light converted its Harding Street plant to natural gas, and after Duke closed a Terre Haute power plant. INRD then expanded its non-coal business by establishing an intermodal alliance with the Canadian National Railway. INRD also opened a warehouse with Indianapolis-based Venture Logistics, along with rail-to-truck facilities in southwest Indiana, Indianapolis and Illinois.
INRD President and CEO Peter Mills sent a memo to employees after receiving notification of winning the award “This is truly a testament to your professionalism and resiliency. When faced with adversity, you remained focused on the things we control. You are truly the best team of railroaders in the industry, which makes our future very bright.”
Mills will accept the award on behalf of the privately-held company at the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association annual convention held in April in Nashville,TN.
