The $5.2 million building is being constructed on a 14-acre parcel as part of a joint venture between the city and the commission.
The 50,000-square-foot facility will be located at the intersection of Doc Hamilton Boulevard and Meridian Road. The city said it will be suitable for a manufacturing company.
“The city of Mitchell understands that providing this parcel of land in the industrial park is a good way to highlight the desirability of the park and the city for business growth,” Mayor Don Caudell said in a news release. “We believe that business leaders appreciate seeing this example of local government collaboration to support the local business community.”
Mitchell is located about 85 miles southwest of Indianapolis.
The city contributed the land for the project, while the RDC is paying for the construction of the building using funds from a TIF district created for the $600 million Heidelberg Materials cement plant that opened in Mitchell last June.
“The County Redevelopment Commission felt very strongly that the relationship of the Heidelberg plant to the Mitchell economy and history was a powerful reason to target Mitchell to receive this first major project to be funded through the Heidelberg TIF,” said RDC member Scott Smith. “We know that Mitchell offers a good opportunity for companies to grow in.”
Construction on the facility is expected to be complete by December. It will be marketed to potential tenants by the Lawrence County Economic Growth Council.
