The facility, when completed, will be operated by Arcadia Cold, a third-party logistics provider headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, that plans to add about 75 jobs.
The 323,000-square-foot facility will sit on a 26-acre site near I-65 in Crown Point.
A spokesperson for Arcadia Cold told Inside INdiana Business the building will be used as a cold storage warehouse supporting food manufacturers, retailers, foodservice companies to store and handle perishable food.
Arcadia Cold will lease the facility from Saxum Real Estate. Details of Saxum’s financial investment in the project were not disclosed, and a spokesperson for Saxum did not respond to a request for more information at deadline Wednesday.
“The greater Chicago regional market is critical to our strategy of building out a national distribution network for our customers,” Arcadia Cold Chief Commercial Officer JD Schwefler said in a news release. “This facility, along with another located in a Chicago submarket, which we will announce shortly, will complement each other to serve our customers with regional production and fast-moving consumer packaged goods programs.”
The facility will have the capacity for about 45,000 pallet positions and feature convertible rooms with temperature capabilities between -10 to 38 degrees Fahrenheit, Saxum said.
“The project will be a mission critical cold storage location to service the consolidation of commodity food products and a regional distribution hub for perishable product grown and processed in the region including Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, and Canada,” Saxum Principal Sean Gilbert said in the release.
Construction on the building is expected to be complete by the second quarter of 2026.
Arcadia Cold is billed as the seventh-largest cold storage operator in the U.S. with facilities in Hazleton, Pennsylvania; Atlanta, Georgia; Fort Worth, Texas; Phoenix, Arizona; and Reno, Nevada. The company also has other facilities under construction in Jacksonville, Florida and Charleston, South Carolina.
