Woodson, an Indianapolis native and former All-American at IU, succeeds Archie Miller, who was fired earlier this month after four seasons with the Hoosiers.
In addition to his time at IU, during which he earned Big Ten Player of the Year honors in 1980, Woodson played 11 seasons in the NBA. He is also a former head coach of the Atlanta Hawks and New York Knicks. He most recently served as an assistant coach for the Knicks.
Scott Dolson, director of intercollegiate athletics at IU, calls Woodson a “great fit.”
“During the last two weeks, I have spoken with numerous individuals at the college and NBA levels, and they were unanimous in their support of and respect for Mike,” Dolson said in a news release. From his ability in terms of X’s and O’s to his skill at building relationships and developing players, his reputation is outstanding. As a coach, he’s succeeded at the highest levels of the NBA, and he’s mentored some of the game’s all-time great players.”
Additionally, the university has announced Thad Matta, former head men’s basketball coach at Ohio State University, will join IU in the newly-created position of associate athletic director for basketball administration.
