School corporations in 10 north central Indiana counties have received $2 million from the Wabash Heartland Innovation Network to bring broadband access to students. WHIN says the funding is the first of a three-year, $6 million project with partner North Central Health Services.

WHIN says schools are allowed to use their allocations to provide student plans compatible with school-issued Chromebooks and iPads, and funding is also available to teachers who don’t have adequate access for preparing lessons at home.

“Internet availability and connectivity are challenges that have long plagued rural school corporations and are issues that were magnified by the need for virtual learning opportunities during the pandemic,” says Dr. Shawn Greiner, superintendent of Southmont Schools. 

WHIN says funding will be administered by school corporations, who will determine participating students and teachers.
