Now called the Rick Alvis Shelter for Men and the Julie Alvis Center for Women & Children, the two facilities honor former Wheeler CEO Rick Alvis and his wife, Julie, who have been involved with the organization for over 30 years.
Alvis retired from his position as CEO in 2023, but the Rick and Julie Alvis Foundation continues to donate to and support the organization, according to a press release from Wheeler Mission. The renaming of the two shelters was announced at a ceremony last week.
“After all Rick and Julie have done for Wheeler over the years, renaming our two Indianapolis locations after them was the perfect way to honor their legacy,” said Wheeler Mission CEO, Perry Hines.
Wheeler Mission is a Christian not-for-profit with programs aimed at helping people experiencing homelessness. In addition to food and shelter, it provides services such as leadership and job skills training, and addiction recovery programs. The organization has been around since 1893, and operates nine facilities throughout Indianapolis and Bloomington.
