WGU says the new degree will help Indiana meet workforce development needs and help educators meet the requirements to earn an initial teaching license in special education in elementary and secondary schools.
According to the university, there is a shortage of special education teachers throughout the country, and the demand for specialized professionals is at an all-time high.
“Special education teachers ensure an equitable education to students with exceptional needs in Indiana and millions more across the country,” said WGU Indiana Chancellor Alison Bell. “With the launch of this new program, WGU stands ready to support the growing demand for specialized teachers and their key role in providing a learning environment where all students have a chance to thrive academically.”
WGU says the MATSPED program is a self-paced, competency-based, online program designed to meet The Council for Exceptional Children and Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation standards.
