Our partners at WTWO-TV report the city will mark the grand opening of the modernized Lester Square Skate Park.
The city partnered with Bloomington-based Hunger Skateparks to redesign the more than 20-year-old attraction. The company replaced the old metal surfaces with concrete and added a new fishbowl, snake trail and other obstacles for skaters.
The skate park was expanded to 15,000 square feet with updated lighting, security features and landscaping.
“I’m just excited to see the kids out here trying all the new stuff,” JR Field, superintendent of Vincennes Park and Recreation, told WTWO. “The fish bowl is my main thing, that thing’s huge. I watched the owner of Hunger Skates on it he was whipping around it like it was nothing and it actually looked exciting.”
While a total cost for the project was not immediately available, Vincennes Park and Recreation was able to raise more than $12,000 through a crowdfunding campaign on Patronicity.
The grand opening ceremony will take place at 10 .m. on Saturday. The park will be open to skaters of all ages and experience levels daily from dawn until dusk.
