The city has launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise $50,000 for the project, which could be matched with state funding.
The project would transform the temporary skate equipment at Lester Square into a more permanent space that the city said would create a safe, family-friendly recreation area.
The Lester Square Skate Park was built over 20 years ago, and the modernization plan includes expanding to a more than 15,000-square-foot all concrete park with updated lighting, security features, landscaping and restrooms, according to the crowdfunding page set up on Patronicity.
If the city hits its $50,000 goal by Aug. 18, the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority will provide a matching grant through the CreatINg Places program.
“Maintaining viable recreation opportunities is important to the health of Indiana, and we need citizens engaged in developing these visions for their cities and towns,” Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch said in a news release. “This skate park is a wonderful example of how the CreatINg Places program can be leveraged on behalf of an entire community.”
The city has inked a design agreement with Bloomington-based Hunger Skateparks. The design includes accessibility for all ages and skill levels with a focus on all types of human-powered wheel activities, including skateboards, roller blades, bicycles, scooters, roller skates and wheelchairs.
The project has only received one donation of $100 as of 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The CreatINg Places program is available to projects throughout Indiana from not-for-profit organizations and local units of government. Since 2016, the program has generated $6.8 million in matching IHCDA funds.
