Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report the author of House Bill 1187, Rep. Tim Brown (R-Crawfordsville), did not hold a hearing for the legislation.
Gary Schools was originally taken over by the state in 2017, in an attempt to save the struggling school corporation. Brown was the author of the bills that declared GCSC as distressed and allowing for the takeover by the the Distressed Unit Appeal Board.
The publication says Rep. Vernon Smith of Gary is glad the bill appears dead. However, he said he is still concerned with the lack of a plan to transition Gary Community School Corp. back to local control.
Smith says the Gary legislative delegation will create an amendment concerning the issue they hope can be added to another education bill in the future.
