President Tom Kazee says the move will put less emphasis on what he calls "at best, a weak indicator of potential success at the college level."
The school says students will have the choice to opt out of sharing SAT and ACT scores for admission consideration for the application period beginning August 1. Those who do not submit scores will be required to submit an essay along with information about high school academic achievements.
In making the move, UE says it joins more than 900 colleges and universities throughout the United States in the test optional approach. Kazee says the change creates opportunities for "high-achieving students whose accomplishments may not shine through on a standard test."
The university says the change applies to all undergraduate programs with the exception of the Baccalaureate to MD program, most engineering majors and direct entry health programs such as the nursing, physical therapy and physical assistant programs.
