The second phase is expected to develop out the North Ninth Street – North River Road section of the greenway, including with a new bridge over the Wabash River for cyclists and pedestrians.
The project will also provide accessibility upgrades with new park-and-ride spaces and bus stop connections, add sections of boardwalk to the trail and construct a new trail bridge, connecting Tecumseh Trails County Park to the Tippecanoe County Amphitheater Park.
The Wabash River Enhancement Corp. partnered with Tippecanoe County, Lafayette, West Lafayette and the Tippecanoe County Metropolitan Planning Organization on the grant, which should allow for project completion by 2032. An additional $1.4 million in funding will by secured locally, project leaders say.
“This is the largest of several recent successes that have marked the beginning of the active development phase of the Wabash River Greenway,” Wabash River Enhancement Corporation Executive Director Stanton Lambert said in a news release. “An award of this magnitude from the USDOT reinforces the need for, and importance of, active transportation infrastructure and its accompanying health, economic and recreational benefits to our community locally, within our region, and the state.”
The Wabash River Greenway follows a stretch of the Wabash River corridor through five counties: Fountain, Warren, Tippecanoe, Carroll and Cass.
The first phase of the greenway expansion received funding from the state’s READI grant program and two Next Level Trails grants. Projects associated with this phase are funded and underway.
