The 4,000-square-foot expansion totals around $730,000 of which $500,000 will be sourced from American Rescue Plan Act funds, according to our partners at WTWO-TV.
The project has also received donations from Elanco Animal Health and Saturn Petcare. Officials are soliciting donations toward the project, which they are $200,000 short on their goal.
“It’s just a piece to make the whole program of the animal control, the shelter and benefit the county and the city,” Vigo County Commissioner, Mike Morris told WTWO.
The organization plans to hire a veterinarian, as well as several vet technicians and a clinic manager.
Leaders hope the clinic will fill a need in the community after a similar clinic providing inexpensive care closed years ago. The shelter believes this may be a solution for owners who surrender their pets because they can’t afford care.
Construction is aimed to be wrapped up later this year and will open its doors at the beginning of 2024.
