Mae Jemison, the first African American woman to travel to space, will keynote the IWIT Summit on September 5 and discuss her experiences and obstacles in the science and technology fields. The week will also include the Eureka Exchange, providing hands-on STEM experiences for more than 1,000 Indianapolis Public Schools students.
The Indy Women in Tech Championship Presented by Guggenheim runs September 7-9 at the Brickyard Crossing Golf Course, designed by Pete Dye. It will feature more than 140 players competing for a $2 million purse, with $300,000 going to the winner.
Organizers of the IWIT Summit at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Pavilion say it aims to "unite the Indy tech community" and push for future growth and diversification of the city’s tech work force. Other panelists include Bridgestone Motorsports Chief Engineer Cara Adams, Octiv Senior Vice President of Product and Engineering Rachel Clark and The Mom Project founder Allison Robinson. In all, around 350 local and national tech and STEM leaders are set to take part in the invite-only event.
One of the driving forces in bringing the tournament to Indianapolis is former Mayor Greg Ballard, who now works with Indy Women in Tech Inc. He says, while the organization is already spearheading efforts like STEM Days and coding academies for women, ?a professional golf event will help shine a spotlight on the program and showcase the city’s growing tech industry.
The three-year agreement to hold the tournament in Indianapolis includes financial and marketing support for programs aimed at engaging young women in STEM activities and career paths and helping "define Indy as the emerging tech hub of the Midwest."
