Indiana had a rate of 2.9 workplace injuries and illnesses per 100 full-time workers in 2022, down from 3.2 in 2021. When the Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses was created in 1992, the rate was 11 per 100, which rose to 11.3 in 1994.
2022 was the eighth consecutive year that the rate is below 4.0.
“2022 was a highly encouraging year in reducing injuries and illnesses among Hoosier workers,” Indiana Department of Labor Commissioner David Redden said in a news release. “We see the strides that employers continue to make in improving workplace health and safety on the whole. The Indiana Department of Labor will continue to work with Hoosier companies across the state to drive this trend.”
The study showed 14 industries had a decrease in incidents, including construction, utilities and educational services. Four had increased; those were finance and insurance; administrative and support and waste management and remediation services; arts, entertainment and recreation; and other services.
