Representatives from both organizations met Wednesday in Lake County to applaud the addition of the state’s 150th Indiana Legal Help kiosk.
The kiosks are available in every county and are specifically placed to help assist Hoosiers navigate complex housing issues, including eviction which, in Indiana, is a civil matter with no legal representation provided to residents.
The kiosks offer Hoosiers access to free legal resources like IndianaLegalHelp.org. The Indiana Housing & Community Development Authority has funded the expansion of civil legal help through a $13.1 million contract.
“Hoosiers across our state deserve the same legal support and representation, whether they live in urban or rural communities,” Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch said in a news release. “I am proud of IHCDA’s involvement in making legal help accessible through the Indiana Legal Help kiosks. These kiosks will contribute to helping Hoosiers maintain a key factor of their quality of life, a safe place to call home.”
In addition to the placement of new kiosks, services available using the help center are also growing. Soon, users will be able to access legal resources covering child custody, divorce, workplace discrimination, driver’s license suspension and reinstatement, and expungement.
The Indiana Bar Foundation, which administers IndianaLegalHelp.org, also recently launched Indiana Legal Help Desk, a free service offering legal assistance on housing issues Monday through Friday via live chat. The program can be accessed on the Indiana Legal Help website or at any of the state’s 150 kiosks.
Housing questions can also be sent in an email to ilh@inbarfoundation.org or via text to 317-548-0350.
