Habitat is outgrowing its current space in St. Joseph County, the organization said, and the grant is helping to renovate a former medical building in Mishawaka to fill its needs.
Those needs are the creation of a new homeownership training program and training center, which will offer classes on construction, home maintenance, budgeting, estate planning and other aspects of home ownership. The new space will also act as part office space for Habitat and can be used for other events.
The center is twice the size of Habitat’s current headquarters in South Bend and will open in 2025. In a news release, KeyBank said Habitat anticipates 3,000 people to come through its classes over the next three years.
Part of the homeownership classes is a focus on Black homeownership. Habitat is creating home-build and roof repair opportunities specifically for Black home owners.
“KeyBank’s purpose is to help the communities we serve thrive, and accessibility to homeownership resources is a crucial element,” said Bhumika Norris, President of KeyBank’s Northern Indiana Market. “We are excited to partner with and support Habitat, helping to connect our community members to industry experts and resources in the homeownership arena.
