In a notice to the state, the general manager of Triad Mining LLC in Oakland City says up to 129 workers are expected to be affected by the decision.
Kentucky-based Blackhawk Mining LLC acquired Triad in 2014. In March, the company announced it was idling the Freelandville Mining operations in Edwardsport. Mining at that location, and the 75 jobs that went with it, ended in May.
Workers at the Log Creek operation are expected to lose their jobs in early October. Triad attributes the decision to "pending and prior sales of the Mine Complex assets, ongoing economic challenges in the domestic steam coal market and demand and pricing for steam coal."
Over the last year alone, hundreds of Hoosier mining jobs have been lost amid weakening demand for coal and industry concerns about regulatory conditions. Large-scale industry consolidations have also played a role in mine closures in and out of the state.
