South Bend-based Beacon Health System says it is exploring the possibility of making a $240 million investment to expand Memorial Hospital, which could create up to 600 new jobs. The South Bend Tribune reports the hospital laid out the plans as part of the South Bend-Elkhart Regional Partnership application for the Regional Economic Acceleration and Development Initiative (READI) program. The health system tells Inside INdiana Business, the project has not yet been finalized.
The 211,000-square-foot addition would include new patient rooms, additional trauma bays and upgrades throughout the campus, according to the publication.
“Memorial Hospital has established the need for a new patient tower on its downtown South Bend campus. After two years of discussions and extensive evaluations, Memorial has begun the planning process for the tower. Discussions have surrounded the age of our facilities and anticipated changes in the way healthcare will be delivered in the future,” said a Beacon Health spokesperson.
The Tribune says financing for the project is already in place, but funds via the READI program could offset some costs, such as incentives from the city.
In addition to the hospital project, the publication says Beacon is working with private developers on an adjacent complex would include 145 apartments, a health club, a 125-room hotel, 35,000 square feet of office and retail space, and parking for 1,200 vehicles.
The proposed project is in partnership with South Bend-based real estate companies Great Lakes Capital and Bradley Company, and the city of South Bend.
“This is still a preliminary concept for Beacon and its project partners, who have not yet finalized the financial aspects of or timing for this proposal,” said the Beacon spokesperson.
The READI proposals suggests an additional 600 jobs could be created by the ancillary project.
The Indiana Economic Development Corp. says it will announce the recipients of the READI awards later this year.
