It is the first time production of the Crosstrek has occurred in the U.S. as SIA is Subaru’s only manufacturing facility outside of Japan.
SIA is producing the 2.5-liter Sport, Limited, and Wilderness Edition models of the Crosstrek. The first vehicle rolled off the line earlier this month.
“Subaru has now sold more than a million Crosstrek vehicles in just 11 years. That’s the fastest any Subaru product has reached the million mark in sales,” SIA Executive Vice President Scott Brand said in a statement to IIB. “That’s why Crosstrek production is now here in the U.S. By building these in demand vehicles in Lafayette, we can get them to our customers faster.”
In addition to the Crosstrek, SIA also makes the Subaru Ascent, Legacy and Outback models.
The start of production on the Crosstrek comes just months after SIA completed the production of its seven millionth vehicle since production began in 1989.
SIA has exclusively produced Subaru vehicles since 2016, and is projecting to build more than 377,500 vehicles this year.
The Lafayette plant employs more than 6,500 workers.
