The name comes from the onyx stone in the SMWC ring, and is the culmination of a student committee charged with finding a mascot in 2017.
Onyx was chosen from three finalists after conducting a survey and holding student forums. “The mascot is much bigger than a visual brand for athletics,” said Dee Reed, executive director of marketing and communications at SMWC. “Onyx will serve as an outreach tool for the entire campus. In addition to cheering on the Pomeroys, she will help to establish a new tradition among students and raise awareness in the community.”
Onyx will greet new students, attend athletic contests and various community and campus events.
