The 2020 Richmond Parks and Recreation Master plan includes dozens of projects and initiatives that the city says will provide a “chance to identify how parks and recreational programs can become a critical tool in the revitalization and growth” in Richmond.
The city says the plan is intended to build on the community’s vision to grow its built environment, connect its destinations, protect its natural resources and celebrate its offerings and accomplishments.
“This is more than just a plan for five years,” Parks Superintendent Denise Retz told the Palladium-Item in Richmond. “It’s almost a business plan that will help us to understand going forward that we have opportunities for additional revenue and what that looks like.”
The plan and list of projects were derived from community feedback over the past year. The publication says much of the feedback showed a need for maintenance and improvements of existing parks and facilities being a priority over adding new amenities.
“A lot of what came out of the master plan was our community really saying, ‘Concentrate on your flagship parks,'” Retz said. “‘We don’t really need any new acquisitions or any new amazing parks. What we need are amazing amenities inside our parks and making them the best they can be.'”
A total of 72 projects and initiatives were narrowed down from an original list of more than 160.
The publication says the 250-page plan also meets grant requirements from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. You can read the full story from the Palladium-Item by clicking here.
