Within one of the city’s most prominent developments, The Elex is scheduled to be completed by the end of next year. The Elex will have nearly 300 apartments, an early childhood learning center, restaurant and retail space and more.
U.S Senator Todd Young joined Fort Wayne officials for a progress update Monday and said the public-private partnership the whole district is an encouraging sign.
“Housing costs are high, and across the country, communities are trying to figure out ways to
revitalize downtowns and make housing more affordable,” Young said in a release. “That’s why The
Elex is a big win for Fort Wayne. The public-private partnerships that have made Electric Works
a reality can serve as a model for communities looking to increase housing options and improve
their quality of place.”
Of the 296 apartment units at The Elex, 89 will be slated as affordable housing units and 59 of those will be restricted to people 55 years of age or older.
Electric Works is being built on the former General Electric campus southwest of downtown Fort Wayne. As the first phase wraps up with office, coworking, education, retail and entertainment space, phase two focuses on building up apartment units. Phase One saw $286 million of investment into the district.
Jeff Kingsbury, the chief customer officer for Ancora, the lead developer of Electric Works, said during his remarks that creating a district for residents to work, live and play in is the developer’s goal.
“The Elex is a testament to our city’s history, and it should inspire a future where residents can truly live, work, play, and learn on one campus in the heart of Fort Wayne,” Kingsbury said. “Adding residential opportunities to campus will enhance the vibrancy of downtown while offering a diversity of residents new housing options.”
Kingsbury said The Elex will release floor plans and rent pricing later this year as it begins pre-leasing.
