The Carolyn Mosby Senior Community is located in a former public housing project and includes 142 units for individuals 55 years of age and up.
The mid-rise building was originally constructed in 1970. Gorman & Co. underwent the rehab in place project in June 2022, updating the 136 one-bedroom apartments and six two-bedroom units to make them ADA-compliant.
The company invested $22.1 million in the project at 650 Jackson Street in Gary.
Gorman said it utilized Section 18 of the U.S. Housing Act of 1937, as well as a partnership with the Gary Housing Authority and funding from multiple bank sources to finance the project.
The project also received financial support from the Indiana Housing & Community Development Authority and City of Gary HOME funds.
“We are excited by our partnership with the Gary Housing Authority and helping with the renaissance of not only the Carolyn Mosby Senior apartments but also Gary, Indiana,” Ron Clewer, Illinois market president for Gorman, said in a news release. “We have been diligent in ensuring the property renovation brings local jobs and advances local expenditures for labor and materials to aid in that renaissance.”
The building serves older adults living within the income groups of 30%, 50% and 60% of the annual median income in the city.
The community is named after Carolyn Brown Mosby, who represented Gary in the Indiana General Assembly for 10 years. Mosby passed away in 1990.
