The Purdue-India Center for Education and Engagement will give the university a presence in India and with partner institutions there jointly offer degrees in fields such as artificial intelligence, data science, semiconductors and business.
Purdue said in a news release that the center also is expected to serve as a direct gateway for government and industry relations, strategic partnerships with Indian universities, alumni engagement and student recruiting.
The U.S.-India Center for Excellence in Semiconductors, meanwhile, is a joint effort with industry leaders to further research and workforce development.
The initiatives mark the latest developments in Purdue’s 125-year relationship with India, dating back to its first Indian students, the university said.
“Purdue is excited to grow our long-standing partnership with Indian institutions and companies across a broad range of disciplines,” university president President Mung Chiang said in the release. “Both our new Center for Education and Engagement in Delhi and the new U.S.-India Center of Excellence in Semiconductors, joint with IIT Hyderabad and supported by our Indian and U.S. governments, are milestone steps toward the expansion of this strategic partnership, with many opportunities for our students and faculty and a continued elevation of Purdue’s global impact.”
The two centers are expected to launch by the end of the first quarter of 2025.
More than 3,000 students from India study on the Purdue campus—the university’s largest international student population—and more than 300 faculty, researchers and staff of Indian origin are in the Purdue community, the university said.
“Purdue has strong support in India and has demonstrated its support for Indian industry and academia as well,” Eric Garcetti, U.S. ambassador to India, said in the news release. “Establishing a presence like this in India empowers students in both nations and strengthens workforce and educational ties.”
In May 2023, Purdue signed an agreement to become the flagship academic partner on semiconductors with the Indian government.
