MonoSol Grows Close to Home

Subscribe NowOn the eve of a traditional Japanese-style opening ceremony for a $95 million MonoSol LLC facility in Portage, its chief executive officer says a global search led the company back to its home region. Scott Bening says factors including work force, labor relations and proximity to large markets, especially Chicago, made growth near its Merrillville headquarters an easy decision. The company is planning to add 150 jobs at the plant.
The company is owned by Japan-based parent Kuraray and produces multiple type of films for uses including "pods" for some of the most well-known laundry and dishwasher detergent brands. Bening says over the last 10 years, growth in the market has been "astronomical." He adds "the laundry business has changed to where the convenience factor and the sustainability factor that’s tied into this delivery system is really driving the growth and the acceptance by consumers literally all over the world."
Bening says the company’s training methods help ensure the work force will be ready even with 150 additional employees coming on-board in the coming years. MonoSol conducted internal and independent research to determine the best site for the expansion. He says all signs pointed to Portage for the new DuneLand facility.
MonoSol’s films are also used by the personal care, food ingredient, water treatment and oil and gas industries.
