(NYSE: PBI) has officially opened a 450,000 square-foot fulfillment center in Greenwood. The commerce services company says it plans to grow the facility’s employee count from 100 to 300 over the next year. Senior Vice President Nick Pellegrino says the center uses automation technology to put fulfillment, delivery and returns services under the same roof. The company says growth in demand, specifically in ecommerce, made the expansion necessary.
During an interview with Inside INdiana Business Reporter Mary-Rachel Redman, Pellegrino said Greenwood’s location and workforce make the Johnson County city ideal for the project.
The new positions, says Pellegrino, will be "traditional warehousing jobs," but adds they will give workers the opportunity to work in a "really nice environment" with state-of-the-art technology.
Pitney Bowes says the Fullfillment, Delivery and Returns Super Center is powered by 63 small robots that perform put-away and picking functions from over 29,000 stacked bins. Once the final phases of construction are complete, the production floor will span the length of three football fields and include space for more than 140 trailers. At full capacity, the company says the center can process up to 44,000 parcels per hour and pack over 34,000 products per day.
President and Chief Executive Officer Marc Lautenbach says the center "establishes a new standard for technological advancement in fulfillment, delivery and returns automation."
