“This Level I Pediatric Trauma Center verification assures families and referring providers that we are prepared to care for the most severely injured children,” Pediatric Trauma Program Medical Director Dr. Brett Engbrecht said in a hospital news release. “Since opening as a pediatric trauma center two years ago, we have care for critically injured children involved in motor vehicle collisions, sports accidents, burns, falls and other injuries.”
The Indianapolis hospital is the only center in the state to hold this designation for all ages. The release states hospitals with this bar have fewer cases of patient complications, shorter stays and less risk of a transfer.
The children’s hospital began providing pediatric trauma care in 2021, treating over 200 patients with such injuries and over 19,000 with emergencies.
The verification process also began in 2021, which resulted in an exhaustive evaluation of the trauma care department. Ascension St. Vincent received its label in 2015.
The children’s hospital was also designated as a Level I Children’s Surgery Center last year.
“ACS Level I verification recognizes that we provide the highest level of care to injured children and their families,” Engbrecht said in the release. “This work that we do touches lives in ways that give healing and hope at what may be the worst time for families.”
