Last month, the city signed a letter of intent with Meridiam to provide a minimum of one gigabit of broadband service.
The city says Meridiam will plan, build and operate the system. Construction is expected to begin later this year.
“This project is the right thing to do for many reasons,” said Mayor Tom DeBaun. “It not only makes our city competitive economically, but also opens paths for everyone to participate in everything from remote work to digital healthcare. High-speed internet will be a game-changer.”
The network will be open-access, allowing other internet providers to use it after a period of exclusive access by Meridiam.
The city says it is not providing any funding for the project. Meridiam plans to fund the project through subscription fees from the providers.
Earlier this month, Meridiam announced plans to invest more than $50 million to bring high-speed internet access to the city of Bloomington.
