A Virginia-based staffing company has entered 13 new markets, including northwest Indiana, as the COVID-19 pandemic puts a pinch on the healthcare workforce. ShiftMed is an on-demand nurse staffing employment agency.

The company says it gives hospitals and nursing facilities a pool of nurses who work full or part-time shifts.

“Factors, such as the rapid spread of COVID-19 around the country, make it hard for nursing homes and assisted living facilities to schedule nurses for patient care,” said Todd Walrath, chief executive officer of ShiftMed. “Full staffing levels are critical for care and regulated by the states.

The ShiftMed platform allows hospitals to input their staff needs. Healthcare workers receive notifications of available shifts and can accept immediately.

The company says it has a pool of more than 300,000 healthcare professionals connected to the app.
