Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report the NICTD, which operates the South Shore Line, provided an update to its board of trustees on the transformational projects.
The Double Track project will add a second rail track parallel to the existing track between Gary and Michigan City, as well as improvements to passenger stations and expanded parking areas, among other enhancements.
The project is expected to be completed in 2024.
The West Lake Corridor Extension will provide commuter train service from Hammond, Dyer, and Munster to downtown Chicago.
“Both projects will be in full construction mode by the time we have our next meeting in July,” South Shore President Michael Noland said during the meeting. “Drive to Michigan City from here and you will see nothing but hundreds of construction workers.”
Noland says the projects will bring major economic benefits to the region by unlocking the potential of accessing the Chicago market
The publication says by the end of 2022, the Double Track railroad work between Michigan City and Dune Park will be completed.
