This was the first time the NFL Combine was put to a bidding process for potential host cities. Indianapolis beat out Los Angeles and Dallas for the next two years.
Indy’s bid was collectively submitted by Visit Indy, the Indiana Convention Center & Lucas Oil Stadium, the city of Indianapolis, Indiana University Health, the Indiana Sports Corp., and the Indianapolis Colts.
“Indy’s vision brings together its long legacy of successfully hosting the Combine and executing the evaluation process, with an exciting focus on innovating and further growing the event from a fan and media perspective,” Peter O’Reilly, executive vice president of club business and league events for the NFL, said in written remarks.
Visit Indy says this year’s NFL Combine generated an estimated $9.6 million in economic impact for the city. It also saw the highest fan attendance in its history.
The organization says Indy’s bid highlighted a new combine fan experience outside of Lucas Oil Stadium for attendees to enjoy before going inside to watch the on-field workouts. Visit Indy’s Chris Gahl says allowing fans into the lower bowl portion of the stadium to watch the workouts this year played a factor.
The city also detailed a new mental health-focused legacy program, led by the Irsay family, will be established in conjunction with the family’s Kicking the Stigma initiative.
“We know many cities want to host the NFL Combine, and we’re incredibly appreciative the NFL continues to put its faith in Indy,” said Leonard Hoops, president & CEO of Visit Indy. “We are proud so many media, agents, scouts, coaches, and athletes organically called to keep the event here. And after more than three decades of hosting the Combine, our excitement has only grown when it comes to continuing our work with the NFL and the National Invitational Camp to make the event better every year for all those stakeholders as well as the growing number of fans who want to experience it in person.”
The 2023 NFL Combine will take place February 28 through March 6. The 2024 event will take place February 27 through March 4.
