Team owner Ersal Ozdemir has decided to pursue one of four MLS expansion slots and will hand deliver the application to league headquarters in New York today. “This is a very exciting decision for our great fan base,” said Belskus. “We very much look forward to working to bring major league soccer to everyone here in Indiana.”
The news comes in the wake of questions about the future of the team’s current league, the North American Soccer League.
The Eleven currently plays in IUPUI’s Carroll Stadium, but is continuing to pursue plans for a new stadium in downtown Indianapolis.
Belskus, the former president of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, was named president of Indy Eleven Professional Soccer in early 2016. At the time, Ozdemir said the hire was part of the team’s focus "to strengthen the organization while continuing to make strides towards gaining a new home for Indy Eleven and winning championships."
