The organization says the number of people seeking help at the mission has increased 65% since 2017.
“This expansion nearly doubles our capacity,” said Wheeler Mission President and CEO Rick Alvis.
The organization says the new facility is pivotal to its mission as it oversees Bloomington’s low-barrier winter shelter program.
“Providing warm shelter, a hot meal, and loving care to men and women experiencing homelessness restores their hope and often changes the course of their lives,” said Alvis.
In addition to the new emergency shelter, Wheeler Mission also runs a Center for Men that provides long-term programming and support.
