‘Mom & Pop’ place in South Bend earns recognition

A South Bend restaurant specializing in pizza and other Italian fare has been named the best place for comfort food in Indiana by the foodie website LoveFood. The team of food journalists scoured the country to find the best “mom and pop” restaurants in U.S. to get a homecooked meal.
In the Hoosier State, Rocco’s Restaurant gets the honor.
The eatery was founded in 1951 and has used the same Italian-rooted recipes for decades. “Our family makes everything from scratch daily, using only the fresh artisan ingredients,” states the website.
The popular local restaurant sits only a few blocks from the University of Notre Dame and when the Fighting Irish have a home football game, there are long lines and long waits to get in the door.
“This place features Notre Dame, Italy and family with a huge dose of outstanding Italian food. Come here hungry because portions are large,” said a Yelp review.
When Rocco’s opened more than 70 years ago, it had just 12 seats. A new generation uns the restaurant and it now seats 150.
