The Journal Gazette reports the company has acquired property on the city’s north side and could open the new location as early as 2020. The publication says the store will be approximately 150,000 square-feet and its locations typically employ about 250.
Meijer spokesman Frank Guglielmi tells the publication the new location will slightly smaller than the retailer’s current stores, which is part of a new design. It will be located on East Dupont Road, west of Tonkel Road in Fort Wayne, across the street from a new Kroger planned for the area.
"At this point all we have done is purchased the property,” Guglielmi said "Fort Wayne is a very important market for us. As a company, we continue to grow and look to invest in communities where we have a strong customer base."
The new Meijer store will include a garden center, drive-thru pharmacy and a fuel station with a convenience store built in front.
Last year, Meijer opened new stores in McCordsville and Franklin. You can read more about the new Fort Wayne location in The Journal Gazette.
