It will employ 160, which is around twice the head count of the old store.
In all, the 70-year-old grocery chain employs more than 3,000 at 22 locations throughout Greater South Bend. Plans for the new store were first announced in 2015. It will include a Notre Dame Federal Credit Union branch, gas station, outdoor patio area, Martin’s Smokehouse BBQ joint, pharmacy and Starbucks Coffee location.
In October, Martin’s opened a store of similar scale in Concord. The grocer has also invested in expanding its "Grocery to Go" mobile order and pick-up services.
