Kohl’s will be the final anchor tenant for the Shoppes at Sunrise Crossing, which is currently being constructed at the site of the former Madison Plaza in the city’s downtown.
The 39,000-square-foot Kohl’s store will join TJ Maxx, Hobby Lobby and Five Below, which have already made commitments for the project. The city said the retailers will add 150 jobs.
Mayor Bob Courtney said in addition to bringing new retail and housing options to the city, the project will also address flood issues by adding a stormwater detention basin.
“This investment in our hilltop is long overdue,” Courtney said in written remarks. “I am proud of the city team and am grateful for the investment in Madison by our development partner, CRM, for their work towards bettering the quality of life and economic opportunity in Madison.”
Tony Steinhardt, economic and redevelopment director for the city, said with the anchor tenants finalized, the city will begin marketing for national restaurants and supporting shops that could locate in out-parcel lots at the shopping center.
In all, the project is expected to have 155,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space.
The Shoppes at Sunrise Crossing is expected to be ready for the 2023 holiday shopping season.
The project also includes a workforce housing component known as the Residence at Sunrise Crossing, being developed by Kentucky-based Winterwood Inc. The development will include 183 apartment units with construction slated to begin in late 2023 and be completed by the fall of 2024.
