The formal lighting of the large sign signals the resurgence of the site that previously served as a center of innovation and manufacturing for the General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE)
In 2015, GE closed the campus. For more than five years, the 39-acre campus and its 1.2 million square feet of space sat vacant.
“I know it was difficult for our community to see the original General Electric sign go dark,” said Do it Best President and CEO Dan Starr. “As the Do it Best team transitions into our new world headquarters in Building 26 at Electric Works, we are thrilled to be part of bringing this important landmark back to downtown Fort Wayne and the Broadway District.”
Electric Works is a mixed-use district that includes office space, education, retail and entertainment. It was developed as a public-private partnership between Ancora Partners and the city of Fort Wayne, Allen County, and the State of Indiana.
The first phase offers more than 700,000-square-feet of space. Additional adaptive reuse will occur in subsequent projects.
“The Northeast Indiana community has supported the redevelopment of the Electric Works campus since its inception,” said Katy Silliman, senior experience director for Electric Works. “This historic site has truly been reborn for innovation and for the future needs of our community, and we invite community members to join us as we illuminate the new Electric Works sign.”
The lighting ceremony begins at 5 p.m. A formal program begins at 6 p.m. with the sign lighting occurring around 6:15 p.m.
