(NYSE: KR) says its central division, which serves much of Indiana and Illinois, is now accepting EBT cards for online orders from customers who use Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits.
Until now, Kroger has accepted EBT cards for SNAP benefits only through in-store purchases. But now it will allow SNAP customers to purchase groceries through the Kroger app or website.
“Thousands of Kroger shoppers place digital orders every week,” said Colleen Juergensen, president of Kroger Central Division. “Now, we are opening our digital grocery shopping experience to more people, with fresh, affordable food conveniently available through Pickup or Delivery.”
The grocer says customers will need to create an account through the app or Kroger.com. The user will need to add an EBT account number as a new card under “My Account” and “Wallet.”
With an active account, customers can fill a cart with SNAP-eligible items, select a pickup or delivery time and checkout.
Kroger says its digital offerings also help customers select healthier options through its OptUP nutrition rating system.
“Kroger believes in being Fresh for Everyone, and this is another important way we are connecting our neighbors to the foods that will help them live healthier, thriving lives,” said Juergensen.
Kroger operates grocery retail stores under various banners. The company says the EBT service has not yet started at its Pay Less stores.
