The upgrades include a yearlong series of road and rail projects conducted by the Ports of Indiana and its rail switcher, MG Rail. Those projects include pavement work, milling and the repaving of a dockside area greater that 1.5 football fields.
MG Rail also renewed seven miles of track and 24 switches. Crews installed 1,500 tons of ballast and nearly 1,400 crossties. Worn rail was also replaced to accommodate more modern rail cars.
“Maintaining safe and efficient operations is critical to the success of our railroad and for the businesses located at the port,” Chuck Long, a representative of Consolidated Grain and Barge Co. which is owned by MG Rail, said in a news release. “We take great pride in our partnership with Ports of Indiana as we both work to provide the infrastructure and services that local businesses need to survive and grow well into the future.”
Indiana’s three ports—Jeffersonville, Mount Vernon and Burns Harbor—are major economic drivers in Indiana. In September, a study from the Ports of Indiana showed that the ports generate an estimated $8.7 billion each year for the economy and support 49,000 jobs.
The Jeffersonville port, the study said, is specifically responsible for $2.48 million in economic impact.
