The 4,000-square-foot expansion of the new Marchant School of Nursing Skills Lab nearly doubled the number of training lab beds to 15 and increased available classrooms from three to eight. Training equipment also was upgraded, the college said in a news release.
“We had simply outgrown the prior lab, and this expansion to our main campus building allows us to accommodate growth and ensure the high-quality experience for our nursing students that Ivy Tech is known for,” Chancellor Erik Coyne said in the news release.
The college had reached capacity for training nurses in its existing 2,900-square-foot building at 101 Daniels Way. The expansion, supported in part by a $1.2 million Indiana University Health grant, is on the main campus at 200 Daniels Way.
Ivy Tech Bloomington accepts 190 students each academic year into its associate of science in nursing and licensed practical nursing programs.
Students began using the new space on Aug. 19.
“With this expansion, we are creating new opportunities and further aligning our nursing education by training students on newer equipment they’ll use in the hospital,” said Kim Roach, dean of the Marchant School of Nursing at Ivy Tech Bloomington. “It also provides more space to accommodate different teaching and learning needs.”
Next fall the nursing school plans to add an evening class for licensed practical nurses, medical assistants, paramedics and military medics interested in pursuing an associate’s degree in the science of nursing.
Ivy Tech Bloomington will host a dedication for the facility on Sept. 23.
