The university announced this month that following an administrative leave, Newhouse will retire from IU Indianapolis in June 2025.
Newhouse was named dean of the school in 2015 after serving in multiple roles at the University of Maryland School of Nursing. She was named a distinguished professor at IU in 2017.
The university said Newhouse has made “exceptional contributions” to the university and nursing profession during her tenure.
“Under her leadership, the IU School of Nursing launched innovative new academic programs and climbed in the rankings, most recently holding the number 2 spot nationally for its online master’s programs in the nursing education track,” IU said in a news release. “Drawing on Dr. Newhouse’s expertise in health systems improvement, acute care quality, and evidence-based practice, she led IU’s $50 million Responding to the Addictions Crisis Grand Challenge.”
Newhouse officially stepped down on Aug. 9. Janet Carpenter, a distinguished professor and the Audrey Geisel Endowed Chair in Innovation at IU, has been named interim dean.
IU said a search for the next dean of the IU School of Nursing will begin later this month. A timeline for a potential successor to be named was not provided.
